The explosions in Lebanon’s capital city, Beirut on the 4th of August have left the whole world in shock, with locals in Beirut scrambling in desperate need for help. The numerous explosions occurred after a large fire at the Port of Beirut spread towards the roof of a warehouse unknowingly containing 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. The explosion’s shockwave was so big that it flattened buildings, flipped cars, shattered windows, and was heard as far away as Cyprus, about 200km across the Mediterranean Sea. The Beirut explosions came at a devastating time as the country was already suffering a major economic crisis, with many families facing poverty and hunger. This was on top of the country’s ongoing battle with the COVID-19 virus.

How can you help?

With limitations of travel due to the global pandemic, the most effective way to help is by donating and fundraising for Beirut through trustworthy organisations and relief programs. Since the tragedy, many passionate individuals, charities, and NGOs started working together to find effective ways to swiftly help the victims in Lebanon during their time of need. This includes crowdfunding to financially support Beirut explosion relief.

In Lebanon, currently, there is no good way to know which charities are the most efficient at using the much needed funds provided to them to help the victims. While donations are urgently needed, it is important for all of us to know that the funds are reaching the organizations that are doing the most work and using our money most efficiently. We are working with people on the ground in Beirut to provide you with links to some of the most trust-worthy Lebanese organizations and NGOs. Please check these organizations’ websites and consider a much-needed donation to them.
